This involved using videoconferencing methods to offer classes in middle and high schools.During this period, I used the winter holiday and (limited) spare time to complete background research for A South Korean Mountain Sketchbook - an illustrated account of hiking in this mountainous country. Of special interest was Mount Halla, South Korea's highest peak, on the island of Jejudo.

As an ALT, I co-taught classes with nine Japanese English teachers - an excellent introduction to teaching!The JET Program included orientation conferences prior to departure from the UK and on arrival in Tokyo. There were additional training opportunities in Japan. These conferences and training opportunities included:- Basic Japanese language: I passed a free Basic Japanese correspondence course;- team-teaching;- cultural adjustment and cultural exchange.ALTs were also encouraged to use our initiative to make a difference in the local community. Perhaps in response to this, I offered an array of special activities at the schools where I taught (e.g. after-school classes, international food tasting, basic Italian). I also took up the opportunity, as a volunteer, to co-teach a weekly class for adults at the community centre in the village where I lived.Apart from this, being one of few non-Japanese people in a small, rural town meant that I met many kind people. I took part in a variety of community activities - such as the local sports day and festivals - and was also hosted by several of my supervisors from the education office and school.
