After intensive study, I passed exams to obtain the complete NCTJ level 3 journalism diploma, with A grades for my e-portfolio and in media law, court reporting, and public affairs. I completed placements and contributed to the Yorkshire Post and Sheffield Star, with an additional five days at Reuters after passing exams.

Based at NTNU's Mandarin Training Center, I passed level 4 contemporary Mandarin Chinese with 96.3%. I also passed the TOCFL exams at level 3 (high intermediate) for reading and listening.

As an EPIK participant, I began with several months' placement at South Korean middle schools, which included organising an intensive International Week of special workshops on different cultures for third-graders, aiming to ease their transition to high school.Having gained some understanding of the South Korean state school system, I was invited to take part in a pioneering project with Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education. This involved using videoconferencing methods to offer classes in middle and high schools.During this period, I used the winter holiday and (limited) spare time to complete background research for A South Korean Mountain Sketchbook - an illustrated account of hiking in this mountainous country. Of special interest was Mount Halla, South Korea's highest peak, on the island of Jejudo.

Taishan Medical University (泰山医学院) is nestled at the foot of Mount Tai, a prominent Daoist peak in China's Shandong province. This was my fourth placement at a Chinese university, and so I was able to offer stimulating undergraduate classes on the old campus and the new campus - and to lecture for the Students' Union to raise funds for earthquake survivors in Sichuan - while also prioritising a cultural research project.My investigation of eight Buddhist and Daoist mountains led, eventually, to the publication of my first book-length narrative, China's Holy Hikes.The mountains that I covered were:1. Although I had previously worked in China and Japan, this was my first lecturing post in South Korea. During my five-month placement with Chosun University's Language Education Institute, I taught undergraduate English, community classes for adults and teenagers, and postgraduate researchers. Outside of class, I began developing interests in Korean culture and lectured in the community as a guest speaker.

I composed around two hundred stories, poems, dialogues and essays for this e-learning platform’s website, edited materials in English, tested the website to ensure that it worked smoothly, and completed voice recordings. In addition, I ran workshops on poetry and Shakespeare and played a key role in presentations in Hong Kong and Macau.

Shortly after arriving in Beijing, I taught an intensive, two-week English communication course for the Foreign Languages Department at Tsinghua University. During the autumn semester, I taught three different courses covering listening comprehension and speaking, drawing on the teaching materials that I had already developed but also making use of textbooks and cassettes where required. In addition, I provided weekly consultation hours for students and contributed actively to the learning environment at Tsinghua University. My special English lecture, attended by around six hundred students and staff members, was entitled “Japan and My Experience” and went down a treat as the first lecture of the season. I also read verse at the launch of a new student poetry society.

As an English lecturer at NUIST, I taught undergraduate, Masters and PhD students, offered an evening class for Chinese English lecturers, and encouraged local people to learn English. My classes at NUIST included conversational English, film courses, an audiovisual class for PhD students, and I also taught some writing. I participated actively in the university’s weekly English Corner and appeared in several student variety shows. In my spare time, I contributed articles and photography to Nanjing-based Map Magazine as a freelance writer.

This was my first lecturing post at a Chinese university. It was also my first experience of living in China. I taught undergraduate Oral English and English Writing. During my spare time, I contributed to a New Internationalist book on world street food (please see https://newint.org/books/food/streetfood.pdf) and laid the foundations for learning Mandarin (which was harder than I had expected).

Based in an education advisors' office on Mondays, I divided the rest of the week between three schools. As an ALT, I co-taught classes with nine Japanese English teachers - an excellent introduction to teaching!The JET Program included orientation conferences prior to departure from the UK and on arrival in Tokyo. There were additional training opportunities in Japan. These conferences and training opportunities included:- Basic Japanese language: I passed a free Basic Japanese correspondence course;- team-teaching;- cultural adjustment and cultural exchange.ALTs were also encouraged to use our initiative to make a difference in the local community. Perhaps in response to this, I offered an array of special activities at the schools where I taught (e.g. after-school classes, international food tasting, basic Italian). I also took up the opportunity, as a volunteer, to co-teach a weekly class for adults at the community centre in the village where I lived.Apart from this, being one of few non-Japanese people in a small, rural town meant that I met many kind people. I took part in a variety of community activities - such as the local sports day and festivals - and was also hosted by several of my supervisors from the education office and school.
