"We judge ourselves on that which we think we are capable of, while others judge us on what we've done. My college baseball coach wrote that phrase on a piece of paper and taped it in everyone's locker one day before practice... and it's always resonated with me. It's a philosophy I use to coach my employees and it's a reminder we all need that we are not entitled - rather we need to prove ourselves every step along the way. I consider myself a natural leader and I have a history of ascending to a leadership position. As a management trainee for Enterprise Rent-a-car in Brooklyn, NY in the early 2000s, I attended my first annual group awards banquet. The room was filled with hundreds of "MTs", all of which had aspirations of moving up the ranks to Assistant Manager and ultimately to the limited Branch Manager title. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but in under 2 years I had been promoted to branch manager of the Downtown Brooklyn branch, and ultimately a few years later into a corporate position in Vehicle Acquisitions.I also believe that most people don't quit their jobs, they quit their manager. My management philosophy is to be firm yet fair; to train and set expectations; to observe and give positive feedback or to give constructive criticism and re-train; and possibly most important to reward positive behaviors and results.
