I worked with Professor Ng to test how effect the support vector machine (machine learning algorithm) is as a recommendation algorithm for video games. This was done in conjunction with our research on how video games affect the social skills of autistic individuals. I Gathered data on various video games across 12 genres to use within the support vector machine recommendation algorithm. I used a LibSVM implementation, coding a wrapper for it in Java as well as creating my own testing suite. The algorithm had an average percent of successful classification of 85%.

Chief Architect produces home design software for both do-it-yourself individuals as well as industry professionals. While at Chief Architect, I designed and implemented 3 customer requested features to extend the functionality of wall organization and cabinet design for Chief Architect Premiere. When designing these features, I worked closely with the Chief Architect team to hone in on creating exactly what the customers needed. After I made the final design decisions, it was up to me to implement the features. The work was both challenging and enjoyable. Aside from adding these new features, which was my main responsibility, I fixed many customer reported bugs and refactored the code base. I am proud to say that through my efforts I was able to simplify, condense, and unify control flow and logic to use similar functions. This lead to leaving the code better than how I found it.

Professor Ng is working on a reading level recommendation program that can effectively assign reading levels (grades 1-12) to any reading material. As part of his research, I spent time testing how efficient the LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) model is at categorizing large sets of documents to determine its potential effectiveness as part of a recommendation algorithm. I designed and implemented a java testing suite to run tests on a standard Gibbs LDA implementation. The types of documents I tested were movie descriptions, board game descriptions, food recipe descriptions, and college course descriptions. The LDA categorization and prediction capability was the highest with college course descriptions. More research is still needed to determine whether or not the LDA will significantly improve recommendation algorithms.

Find-A-Code, also known as Innoventrum, assists in the process of medical insurance coding by providing online help tools and printed books. As a developer at Innoventrum, I worked on API driven JavaScript widgets that packaged several of the medical coding tools to be embedded on other webpages. In addition to working on those tools, I worked closely with other developers in maintaining the company's commercial Drupal website. Part of maintaining the Drupal site included adding new tools for in house customer service use. In order to provide the best tools possible, I filled the role of UX (user experience) expert in identifying exactly what was needed by our customer service team. By using techniques such as story boarding, creating personas and identifying pain points, I was able to design and implement tools to streamline their workflow. As a final responsibility at Innoventrum, I maintained a legacy PHP site. This involved database maintenance and fixing reported bugs.

I served the people of Buenos Aires by helping them establish positive habits, overcome addictions, and come closer to Jesus Christ. I also served in various leadership positions, namely district leader, trainer, and zone leader. These leadership positions expanded my responsibilities to encourage and guide other missionaries to enhance their efforts in serving the people of Buenos Aires.
