Director, User Experience
Providence Health & Services created a digital innovation team in 2014 to give themselves capabilities to deliver a 10x better consumer experience, focusing on that 1% of technology that is too critical to outsource. They hired me as their first director of user experience. I grew the UX team, and working collaboratively with our product and engineering teams we researched, designed, tested, and delivered a mobile app, and a web app that helps consumers find and book virtual, retail and at home care. NPS scores for patients scheduling online are 10+ points higher v. traditional walk-ins.
Director Of User Experience And Quality Assurance
As the Pharmacy OneSource board and shareholders began preparing to complete an exit, they hired our first CTO, Kaj. Realigning the technology organization, he asked me to apply my passion for easy to use software to the quality assurance team. I created a new role in the organization with a singular focus on quality. With the help of leaders on the team like Jason we moved the group from a quasi-support and manual testing role to one of acceptance test-driven-development and continuous integration. We reduced both the number of outstanding defects as well as the number of introduced defects by 66% and 75% respectively. I completed the transition to a strategic and forward-looking role. I learned to lead great teams by finding great people, setting clear goals and getting out of the way, stepping in only to remove roadblocks and obstacles. Our successes, driven by the quality of our innovative products, led to the acquisition by Wolters Kluwer at the end of 2010. I’ve lead the UX team in building out a design pattern library, our personas and our research library which has over three hundred interviews and artifacts. Sentri7 is today rated by KLAS as both the highest overall and easiest to use in its category.
Director Of User Experience
On the back of the immediate success of Sentri7, and realizing we had seven web based applications, we began to grow the team. I took a lead role and was responsible for hiring interaction designers. The development organization, led by Matt, Mike and Jerome, recognizing what are today well understood challenges presented by working in large batch sizes, introduced Agile. After they and Thoughtworks educated me on why to work this way, I started the transformation in how the User Experience team wrote, and delivered requirements and worked with developers.
Interaction Design Architect
In a constant effort to learn how to create the best products, i discovered what was missing in my skillset as a web developer, a deep understanding of our users. I found and developed a passion for User-centered design, Cooper's and Norman's versions in particular. I proposed and took the role of Interaction Design Architect, responsible for communicating requirements in terms of user interface specifications to the development team. Working closely again with Charles we created personas, conducted user research and I wrote the first interaction design specification for our flagship application, Sentri7.
Web Application Developer
I joined Pharmacy OneSource early in 2001, a few months after launch, Keith needed someone to create and manage web content for the community. Leveraging my computer science college work, and aptitude and love for coding, I quickly learned vbscript from Abe and SQL from Matt. In Early 2003 I developed the first version of Amplifi from just a few conversations in just a few weeks. I then redesigned and redeveloped DiOne. The success of Amplifi led to our first profits and the first merger. I worked closely with Charles to design and develop Accupedia, a web-based pediatric infusion dosing and ordering application.
