Profile bio

About Jacob Goff

I am a coastal wildlife biologist for Wildlife Mississippi primarily in the six southernmost counties of the state.I am an avid outdoorsman with a strong background in natural resource management and geotechnical skills. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Geography from the University of Southern Mississippi and have worked as a wildland firefighter and natural resource specialist to blend geospatial technologies with habitat monitoring and management. Performing as a committed team player has pervaded my every job, internship, and mission, including becoming an eagle scout at the age of 16, being a team member in NASA’s DEVELOP program, 4+ years with the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and now with Wildlife Mississippi. I devoted the last five years to conducting monitoring studies of the floral and faunal communities of south Mississippi’s longleaf pine savannas, cypress drains, bogs, and marshes, as well as implementing prescribed fire and invasive species control. My skills with cartographic design help communicate the spatial relationships of our wildlife and habitat with maps in a way words alone simply cannot. Being a Mississippi coast native, my understanding of the concerns and culture of the people in this region significantly lends itself to building the trust and working relationships required to further native habitat restoration and enhancement on private lands. Building and maintaining relationships with private landowners, who have identified conservation of natural resources to be a high priority of theirs, is vital to the success of Wildlife Mississippi’s mission on the Coast.

Environmental/Natural Resource Specialist Iii (Upland Restoration Specialist)

Moss Point, Mississippi, United States

Guiding large-scale, multi-state habitat conservation and management through coordinating among partners to expand habitat restoration activities and to maximize the habitat value of the Grand Bay Savanna Complex (GBSC). I plan and coordinate among all agencies and tribal interests (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma), within the GBSC, engage with private landowners, and develop comprehensive management plans for the larger GBSC. Partners include U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy, Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, and AL Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Developing relationships with private landowners of lands within the boundary of the GBSC is also of vital importance and includes developing legal conservation easements and Memorandums of Understanding to permit state and federal habitat management (prescribed fire, timber stand improvement, herbicide treatment of invasive plant species) on those private parcels. By maintaining cooperative relationships with stakeholders and partners within the GBSC, land management and monitoring activities can continue across unbroken tracts of land to maximize the ecological integrity of the landscape, the footprint of natural resource conservation is expanded, the construction and maintenance of firebreaks is reduced, and the potential for catastrophic wildfire is also reduced. My responsibilities also include wildlife monitoring (game species, and avian and herpetofaunal communities of the longleaf pine savanna), creating and updating thematic maps, map layers and metadata utilizing GIS (ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, and other ESRI products), and collaborating daily with the stewardship team to further longleaf pine habitat restoration efforts.
