My role was to identify how these failures had occurred and what the failure mode was. Also to present my findings to our customers.Product failures: With rare instances of in service failures or more commonly product that had failed after the expected life but before the vehicle had, investigations into why were carried out to help with future design improvements. My role was to identify the failure mode and suggest what needs to be done to prevent this kind of failure in the future. This role also covered production metallurgical issues such as; Sub-arc weld cracking, where center line cracking of the weld was occurring with certain steel casts. I identified that we were purchasing steel with a too high a UCS value for our process and needed to define the upper value and put in place a containment procedure for the already purchased steel.This first role was a very interesting one, where I gained an in-depth understanding of the Product Engineering process and how to engage with customers when issues arise. I felt some real life experience of a manufacturing facility would help me apply my higher learning into practical scenarios rather than just theory. Due to myself having fresh eyes within such a mature manufacturing company, one of my first tasks was to create and present a visual aid showing how the multi-piece rims produced at Titan interfaced with the vehicles and tyres. This was mainly for the Engineering Manager, who would regularly meet with other cross functional teams who would struggle to grasp the orientation or the interaction between the multi-piece rims and the vehicle. The graphics also served as great visual aids for the workforce as many didn't fully understand what they were making and why certain critical aspects were so important.Also during my placement year I was involved in a safety issue where an end user had injured himself not following the correct deflation procedure when removing a multi-piece rim. I was tasked to create an instruction graphic that would be stuck on every rim, to remind the end users the critical stage of the deflation procedure.I really enjoyed my placement year at Titan Steel Wheels, I gained valuable experience which ignited my desire even more to get into a career Manufacturing. With such an interesting year, Titan offered to sponsor my final year at University, with a job offer upon my graduation within their engineering department. Show less
