For as long as I can remember I’ve been deeply curious about how people can have such different experiences of the same worldly phenomenon. Growing up in my father’s bed and breakfast in St. Lucia meant getting a daily dose of diverse thoughts delivered through guests visiting from all parts of the globe. Throughout my life I’ve lived at the intersection of what is said, what is intended by what was said, and what is understood by what is said (The Three W’s). From growing up in Brooklyn as an immigrant to negotiating deals with Brazilian, Canadian, Chinese, and German nationals, to living in various parts of the United States, to studying both law and business practices, I’ve learned that understanding the Three W’s is key to effective communication and collaboration. I’m constantly seeking to improve on my understanding of the Three W’s in my daily practice with my colleagues, clients, counterparties, leaders and those whom I have the privilege to lead or manage. As a corporate attorney responsible for a wide variety of transactions, I am able to implement the Three W’s in a manner that decreases the gap between what is intended by clients and what is understood by counsel and vice-versa, leading to quicker and more robust engagements.
