During my time at UTA, I focused on Embedded Microcontroller and Embedded Microprocessor Systems courses. Additionally, I spent time learning about the Verilog Hardware Description Language as well as the basics of Altera's Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) tools such as ModelSim and Quartus Prime from a friend working at Alterra. The most notable projects during my time while earning my masters degree were from the advanced microcontroller and advanced microprocessor courses. The first project was the implementation of a Real Time Operating System (RTOS). The RTOS was written for an ARM M4F microcontroller that implemented a preemptive RTOS solution with support for semaphores, yielding, sleep, priority scheduling, and a shell interface. The second project was a Four Stage Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) Processor. The design of this RISC processor included stall, flush, and data forwarding logic. Additionally, I added a special project course with my embedded professor to implement the logic for the RISC processor on an FPGA. Out of necessity, I wrote an assembler for this project and loaded the machine code program into registers within the FPGA fabric using Tool Command Language (TCL). While completing the special project course, my adjunct embedded professor asked me to join him at Nokia for an internship. I accepted the internship which led to a full time position at Nokia in the Digital Pre-Distortion group in Irving, Texas.At Nokia and with my previous embedded professor, I began working on verification for the Application Programming Interface (API) for an ASIC that is part of Nokia's Reefshark Chipset. This API is an Object Oriented C++ solution that maps out the necessary DSP blocks in the TX path as well as the Parameter Estimation DSP blocks into classes to support, at the time, future Digital Pre-Distortion solutions. During the API creation and verification process I was selected to become the Parameter Estimation programming expert for the Digital Pre-Distortion team. Since the fabrication of the ASIC, I have written Parameter Estimation solutions for many different radios that have been deployed all over the world.
