As my internship with Michels concludes, I have a lot to look back on. During one of the busiest summers of my life, I was given the chance to take part in a few big projects with Michels. My general duties include estimating proposed jobs, sifting through job scopes and preparing bid documents, clarifying and picking apart job specifications, and my favorite part, managing ongoing jobs. I took part in one especially large bid project for a set of four different pumping stations in the Dakotas, and was also put in charge of a larger meter changeout job throughout Wisconsin. Both of these roles pushed me to find efficient ways of communicating and managing and I learned many valuable skills along the way.

As a Laborer, I was nothing but the chance to prove myself, and that’s what I had come to do. With duties ranging from cleaning out buildings, to updating inventory systems, and even preparing new equipment for the job site, I was at anyone’s disposal. A few highlights of my summer as a Yard Laborer include learning to drive a Telehandler and a Track Hoe, getting a ton of insight about what goes on behind the scenes of the job site, and learning everything I wanted to know about Michels Corporation.

Switching up my role at Menards was pretty exciting, and getting to see a whole new side of the company was definitely cool. Working in the distribution center I had the job of unloading receiving loads, taking the freight “across the dock” and loading it into the correct trailer for a specific store. During my time at the DC I maintained a very high rate of productivity while staying safe and maintaining my quality of work.

I unloaded incoming freight from semis, helped guests locating and loading their merchandise, and sustained a clean and safe work environment. I also obtained valuable operating skills using forklifts, low lift jacks, order selectors, and genie's on a regular basis.
