I am an architect shaping space, experience, and community. To this end, throughout my career I have sought to expand the traditionally defined role of the architect. Ultimately, my two main professional priorities are 1) to create spaces and places that improve lives and 2) to develop new practices, products, and processes that empower those whose labor — from the design studio to the job site — goes into creating these spaces and places.Concurrent with my professional work, I have been a member of the faculty of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design since 2019, where my teaching and research critically examines architectural practice and the future of the workplace, both within and beyond the AEC industry. My dedication to service extends back to my 2002-2004 tenure as a Teach for America Corps Member and public elementary school teacher in New York City’s South Bronx.I am committed to print publication as an essential form of discourse and design. To put it more simply, I really love books. I am a co-founder and editor of the journal CLOG, and in 2017 I completed the OfficeUS Manual, a critical, occasionally humorous, and sometimes stupefying guide to the architectural workplace over the last one hundred years. The Manual is the culmination of four years of research into professional practice that I collaboratively initiated as Assistant Curator for the US Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2014.
