ASSOCIATION is a student-run publication featuring the work of students, faculty, and alumni across the disciplines of Architecture, Art, and Planning, with particular interest in cross-disciplinary projects that demonstrate the connections and overlaps between these fields.

Shop Assistants help students with our traditional shop equipment -- wood and metal -- working directly with staff in that area. Shop Assistants are responsible for training incoming students; monitoring the wood and metal shops; aiding in the use of equipment; reinforcing safety; cleaning the wood and metal shops, as well as the annex space; and assisting with miscellaneous shop-related projects.

Lab Assistants help students with the digital fabrication equipment, mainly CNC machines, laser cutters, and 3D printers, working directly with university staff. They are responsible for training students to operate and program the CNC machines; monitoring the laser-cutting appointment schedule; troubleshooting issues with the laser cutters and 3D printers; reinforcing safety; cleaning the lab and CNC area; and assisting with miscellaneous lab-related projects.

Worked directly for principal architects creating multiple 2D and 3D models in SketchUp and AutoCAD, forming working hand-drawn sketches for ongoing projects, visiting and coordinating job site tasks, and researching zoning regulations and historic preservation guidelines.

Worked directly for the Historic Preservation Manager and the Head Urban Designer. Preservation Division work included documenting and researching historic structures, drafting a proposal to the National Park Service for a historic district, and revising the city’s architectural design guidelines for developers. Urban Design Division work included researching and participating in a committee (balancing stakeholder and city interests) for a new public waterfront park, creating documentation and guidelines for the city’s permanent public art collection, and researching and creating documentation for the city’s temporary public art initiative.

Worked directly for Chief Operations Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Head of Maintenance doing tasks such as reviewing and digitizing asset assessment data, performing revised BOMA calculations on existing properties, reviewing and researching possible energy efficiency improvements, and recording information during development meetings pertaining to hotel, commercial, and residential reuse and development.

Worked directly for Principal in the Architecture Department. Work included developing conceptual drawings and hand-built models, visiting both small and large scale job sites, shadowing leaders in the Interior Design, Planning, Project Management, and Environmental Departments, and researching historical contexts (cultural uses, architectural history, relevant regional materials, etc.) and compiling background information for projects in Finland, India, and Saudi Arabia.
