Having spent childhood speaking Malayalam with family, Hindi with friends, and English at school, I am drawn to people far different from me, with beliefs greatly contrasting my own. Such experiences inspired a love for founding roles in start-up teams, the yearning to explore new lands and unfamiliar cultures, and the patience to soothe fearful, grieving hearts. Above all, I’m convinced that life must be a beautiful journey compelled by our highest moral ambitions. How else could it be? You find a challenge that pulls you in – like moth to flame – and you pour your heart into it. What better thing could you do with your life? What better destiny could you possibly bring to light? As a child, I yearned for mountains to climb and oceans to sail. I wanted heroic adventures to strange lands to fight fire-breathing dragons and to save the village from three-headed monsters. As an adult, I’m in inner-city schools - in Quito, in Delhi, in Newark - in buildings with roaches and mice, surrounded by urban poverty and political neglect. It is not the same. But yet, this work provides a struggle for something noble and heroic and transcendent. It is the impossibility that makes it compelling. I’m aware that despite all our efforts, failure is the likelier outcome. I am not an idealist. But for those same reasons, the smallest success can taste so much sweeter, and even one life changed can mean so much.What better thing could I possibly do with my life?These are the ideas that fuel me.
