About Jacqueline Howells

With over ten years of combined research experience in immunology, neurobiology, and ecology, I am a Doctor of Philosophy in Pathobiology at Brown University and a Researcher at Rhode Island Hospital. My current work focuses on investigating how to ameliorate or reduce suffering associated with disease using innate immune cells shape pathogenesis from methods and frameworks drawn from ecological and systems biology frameworks and methods. I hope to learn about disease from health states and about health from disease states to accelerate the quality of both translational and fundamental immune research to broadly treat rare congenital disease like SCID, neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and as adjunct therapy for current medically induced myeloid aberrancies like chemotherapy using novel genetic tools and animal models. My passion for understanding the interactions of living organisms and their environment drives me to pursue research that bridges the gaps between different disciplines and challenges the conventional paradigms. I have developed a strong skill set in cell biology, immunotherapy, and neuroscience, as well as a keen interest in the philosophy of science and the design of experiments. I am motivated by the potential of discovering new insights into the function and dysfunction of the immune system and the brain, and ultimately contributing to the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies for improving human health and well-being.

It is becoming quite clear that innate immunology may have much more plasticity and roles in immunomodulation, especially in the context of health and pathobiology. I am very excited to apply what I have learned in the past 4 years using an invertebrate model to understand innate immune mechanisms of neurodegeneration in addition to former clinical adaptive immunology work I was so lucky to work on in the context of autoimmune disease.
