As Head of Communications, I lead a remote team of 15+ dynamic communications, social media, and creative design professionals.I am committed to empathetic leadership and creating a space where my team feel empowered to collaborate freely, develop new skills, and strive to create their best work.I am a member of Mitacs's Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and provide communications strategy and direct council to C-Suite/Executive.I work closely with Mitacs's government relations team. This includes multi-channel communications to demonstrate Mitacs's impact and thought leadership in the innovation space. The strategy has worked to secure $250+M in National and Provincial funding.My wheelhouse is crafting strategic, inclusive communications plans that lean into creativity and explore new ways to connect with audiences. I have extensive experience in crafting and deploying full-scale media and storytelling strategies to raise brand awareness, demonstrate impact, and promote the voices of both established and burgeoning thought leaders.In 2021-22 increased reach by 28.6%.In 2022-23 increased reach by 24%.In 2023-24 increased reach by 14%.On any given day at Mitacs, you can find me:- Overseeing editorial schedule, drafting newsworthy releases, timing comms to topical current events.- Meeting with Executive to support corporate communications and advise on reputational issues.- Connecting with journalists to pitch op-eds, articles, and interviews.- Developing thought leadership pieces (media, blogs, social content) with leading academics, industry voices, and Mitacs's own leaders.- Crafting engaging stories that demonstrate impact and raise awareness of organization brand, vision, and mission.- Championing outside-the-box thinking, developing and deploying new ways of connecting with audiences through digital content, new partnerships, and pop-up events.

As an AE I was the project manager who is the first point of contact between authors and the Press. The key to success in this role is superior organization skills and ability to manage competing deadlines and projects. As AE, I am responsible for list building and uncovering new areas in which to publish, bringing in new authors and manuscripts, and working with an author from proposal, through development, to publication of the book. I am also responsible for introducing the project to the other departments within the Press (sales, marketing, and production) and all originating written communications related to the projected.The day-to-day:- Oversee management of a manuscript from proposal through development and finally into production. This includes development of manuscript (editing and suggestions).- Responsible for all communications related to a manuscript project including drafting internal documents like the peer review file, the Manuscript Information Sheet or MIF (which briefs the Press on editorial, sales, marketing, and production aspects of the project). - Work directly with Canadian government agencies like Canada Council for the Arts and SSHRC. - Frequently draft grant applications, work with universities, and create partnerships between organizations, charities, and research initiatives to fund book ventures and new book series.- In addition to internal copy and grants/application writing, as AE I'm responsible for drafting the originating description of book, back cover copy, collaborating on copy for website, series descriptions, author bios, etc.- Job also has a travel component (conferences). Public speaking, book launches.
