I performed clinical ophthalmic examination, medical and surgical treatment of small animal patients in a busy private practice setting 3.5 days per month. On average, I examined between 15 and 30 patients and performed 2-3 surgeries daily. I enjoyed the opportunity to see a large number of clinical patients and to work with motivated and committed clients in a metropolitan area.

I competed in Ironman triathlons as a part-time professional carded athlete.

My early research focused on immunohistochemical and polymerase chain reaction studies of lung and ocular tissues for mediators of inflammation and vascularization and also for leptospira bacteria and their role in equine recurrent uveitis. These studies documented the presence or absence of angiostatin, alphavbeta3 and toll-like receptors in both pulmonary and ocular tissue as well as documenting various inflammatory mediators relevant to pulmonary intravascular macrophages and the very rare presence of leptospira bacteria in the eyes of horses with equine recurrent uveitis. The results of these studies provided new information that contributed to general understanding of ocular and pulmonary inflammatory processes as well as the role that vascularization mediators play in the eyes of various normal animal species. I served as the primary investigator or co-investigator in all of these studies.I developed an interest in retinal disease, exotic animal ophthalmology, as well as infectious ocular disease during my clinical experiences as a resident. I made several contributions to clinical veterinary ophthalmology practice in these areas of interest. These studies provided information for clinicians regarding quality of life predictions for dogs with sudden acquired retinal degeneration, appropriate antifungal choices for the treatment of equine keratomycosis, and successful surgical management of nodular granulomatous episcleritis and entropion in goats. I served as the primary investigator or co-investigator in all of these studies.
