Engaged in many varied projects related to environmental engineering, microbial ecology, and water quality monitoring. Wrote portions of publications and produced publication-quality figures and tables. Assisted with field installation of monitoring system on the Columbia River at the Hanford Site. Conducted geochemistry analysis on filtered river water samples from international field sites using ICP-OES, ion chromatograph, carbon analyzer (for carbon and total nitrogen, TN). Sampled at field sites in Washington and Oregon. Conducted DNA extractions on soil and rock swabs collected from Brobrog Hillfort, Sweden. Performed X-ray Diffraction (XRD) on oven dried soil samples for mineralogy characterization. Utilized geochemistry modeling using The Geochemist's Workbench® software.

Conducted microbial cell count determination using sediment stained DAPI slides. Performed total organic carbon (TOC) analysis on sediment samples and assisted in protocol development of solid sample TOC testing. Recorded geologic observations of soil cores from the Hanford site. Operated vacuum and peristaltic pumps for testing viability of aquifer tubes at Hanford field site. Assisted with the configuration of a desiccation system and the basic programming of a data logger.

Performed research on bioremediation of iodine contamination in Hanford Site groundwater, using various Shewanella strains and other bacteria. Conducted daily sampling using aseptic techniques, performed assays on a spectrophotometer, prepared various chemical solutions, disposed of generated waste, and utilized a bioreactor. Recorded data, observations, and procedures in a laboratory notebook and analyzed data using Microsoft Excel. Wrote a research report and presented findings to peers at conclusion of internship.
