In my role as Senior Legal Counsel at Downer EDI Mining, I am responsible for a variety of high dollar value commercial transactions ranging from Contract Negotiations and Formation to Leasing and Property transactions to Industrial Relations matters, Human Resource issues and Personal Injury claims. I work across the spectrum of the Mining businesses in Open Cut, Underground, Tyre Management, Rim Construction and Civil Work. I conduct litigation files and I regularly brief external lawyers. I regularly attend Negotiations, Settlement Conferences and Mediations with a focus on obtaining satisfactory commercial outcomes for all parties. I work closely with a range of stakeholders in the business ranging from Project Managers to General Managers to EGM's as well as our CFO and CEO. I have also designed an in-house full day training programme focussing on Contract Administration which is regularly delivered to the Downer EDI Mining business.

I returned from working in London to take up a role as a Construction Lawyer at Ebsworth and Ebsworth Lawyers. For the first 12 months of my employment I worked solely on a major construction litigation for one of Australia's largest civil construction firms. I was seconded to their office and I recruited and managed a team of lawyers and secretaries to carry out the pre-trial steps. During this time, I worked closely with Counsel. I was solely responsible for the conduct of the litigation (under the Supervision of the Senior Construction Partner) and I planned and managed how the work was going to be carried out. At the conclusion of the litigation, I returned to the office where I managed other construction litigation files before offered an opportunity to undertake a 3-month secondment at Virgin Blue. I received a great deal of front-end commercial experience during my secondment which built upon my litigation experience and utlimately launched me into an in-house role at Downer EDI Mining.

During my working holiday in the UK, I was fortunate to be offered a role at BLP to work on a major multi-million pound construction litigation involving a malfunctioning sewerage treatment plant in Northern England. It was a very interesting experience and during my employment I managed the practical side of the litigation as well as directing and mentoring two Trainee Solicitors and a Junior Para-Legal. This required me to regularly liaise with the client, attend meetings with Counsel, carry out discovery (in a team of 5 other lawyers and 1 partner) and manage the firm's interaction with the Royal Courts of Justice - Construction Division.

Once completing my Articles, I moved to a National Firm in their Insurance team. In this role, I ran a large caseload of Defendant Insurance files, briefed Counsel and appeared in Court. The role required me to liaise with high level insurance companies as well as government agencies. In addition, I was a founding member of the “YEP” Young Executives Programme within the firm as well as the Volunteer Events Manager for “Women in Insurance - Qld Chapter”.
