About Jacques Giard
I was educated as an industrial designer in both Canada and the UK, practiced professionally for several Canadian companies for several years before entering academia in 1975. In the intervening years, I was director of the School of Industrial Design at Carleton University and Director of the School of Design at Arizona State University. Until my retirement, I was a professional member of both the Industrial Designer Society of America and the Association of Canadian Industrial Designers. I was elected national president of the latter when it hosted the world conference of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design in 1997.I am the author of three books on basic design history and theory and one book on design and sustainability. I was also twice a finalist for the award of Professor of the Year at Arizona State University.Upon retirement, I was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus.

The position of Director of the School of Design was a natural progression in my career as I was a firm believer that the human activity called design was more potent when there was cooperation and collaboration between and among various design disciplines. The School of Design, which comprised graphic design, industrial design and interior design, was part of a larger college that included architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning. In my mind, these design disciplines constituted most of the major players in the built environment and allowed students, faculty and staff to work across the disciplines. Later, I became Director of the College’s PhD Program.

I began my career with Carleton University as associate professor of industrial design in the School of Industrial Design and became its director in 1986 and remained in that position for 10 years. I was promoted to Full Professor during this same period.

My appointment as assistant professor in the Department of Art and Design was my introduction to academia as an educator. Up to this point, I had been a practicing designer. Eventually, I became Coordinator of the industrial design program.
