Retired to a small rural village with all the challenges of such environments. So now I am active in community development with an NPO Care4Tulbagh.---Before retiring my interests focused on the following: design thinking, re-engineering higher education, and the early 21st century revolutions - the knowledge society; the 4th industrial revolution, and its accompanying social revolution. This involves new ways of learning, of the work force, as well as the work place.----I've been involved with higher education for a long time: as Associate Professor in Multimedia (Univ Pretoria), Advisor of Educational Technology (Unisa), Head of School of IT at Monash South Africa. When the Web hit the world, I was a consultant.----I am a technophile, but the human factor can never be left out of the equation. So my passion is the relation between humans and technology -- particularly our interface and interaction with technology, and how the operations of technology should be human friendly.Given that I live on the African continent, which is technologically challenged, I am particularly interested in how ICT could/might be an enabler to create opportunities for the bottom of the pyramid -- not necessarily for economic development, but for personal and social development. With this in mind, I established an international forum in 2006 - IDIA: International Development Informatics Association as a platform for researchers to share approaches to such development. Since then we have had annual conferences in different places in the world, with participants from more than 40 countries. I was also Editor-in-Chief of two books on Development Informatics (or ICT4D).My academic hobby:In the late 1990s I developed an ontology, expressed in an XML language, for music as sound. Most XML-based languages for music focus on Common Western Music Notation (CWMN). My ontology was about music as a whole, agnostic about music notation. More recently I developed an ontology to reconstruct acoustic music instruments - based on physical acoustics. I was an editor of a book on the information architecture of music.
