I have been working as a Ranch Hand on our ranch since I was in Middle School. We run about 800 head of cattle in Hackberry, Louisiana. My dad and two uncles are in partnership. The name of our ranch is West Hackberry Cattle Company. My experience on the ranch helped me win the Louisiana High School Calf Roper of the year my senior year in High School. I also made it to the National High School Rodeo twice. I traveled to Rock Springs, Wyoming and Guthrie, Oklahoma to compete in the calf roping at Nationals. I've also worked in Carthage for other Cattlemen. I've learned how cattle are worked in East Texas. Not only can I rope calves but I also rope steers. I have competed in the team roping as both the header and the heeler. Working cattle and rodeoing has helped me with my horsemanship, roping, and being a better cattlemen.I've worked cattle with other cattlemen from Cameron Parish most of my life. I also have eight Cur dogs. They are a short-haired dog used in hunting and herding. My dogs bay cattle, pen cattle, and drive them. This allows the owner of the ranch to hire less cowboys. These dogs are bred and trained to hunt cattle down and hold them in place until the Cowboys get there. The dogs have helped me get day work because of their talent.
