Assisted a PhD candidate with her project in understanding the role of young and old erythrocyte-derived exosomes in aging, and their effect on the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Exosomes were isolated from the whole blood of young and old aged mice through using a density-based centrifugation, then purified using size exclusion chromatography. Afterwards, their presence was validated using dynamic light scattering, Nanotracking Analysis (NTA), western blot and ELISA. Once the presence of exosomes were validated, other studies were done to study their effects on the blood-brain barrier to understand their effects on aging. Through this research, I was also able to gain experience in mammalian cell culture and sterilization techniques, along with project planning and writing protocols.
