Undergraduate Researcher

Ucsb Ocean Recoveries (Stier) Lab

University Of California Santa Barbara, California, United States

Project Description: Kelp forests are under threat from dense patches of sea urchins that transform them into barren wastelands. Within these urchin barrens, kelp can be consumed by urchins at an alarming rate, leading to the loss of kelp forests. In addition to the effects of urchin barrens, marine heat waves also contribute to the decline of kelp abundance by negatively affecting blade development. Although both of these factors have been studied independently, the interplay between them remains unknown. This study will investigate how increasing temperatures affect urchin herbivory rates and the degradation of kelp forest ecosystems. Responsibilities:R Analysis: Conduction of in-depth R analysis of long-term ecological research data to determine the marine heat wave temperature thresholds, urchin density abundances, and kelp density abundances among different sites along the coastline.Project Development: Conduction of a comprehensive literature review of previous research in the field and designing a mesocosm experiment to expose different densities of urchins to ambient, almost marine heat wave temperature, and marine heat wave temperature.Project Execution: Execution of the project by diving within the Santa Barbara coastline to collect urchins and kelp for the mesocosm experiment. Executing daily experimental tasks such as urchin herbivory and temperature measurement, organism feeding, and other tasks required for maintaining the mesocosm experiment.Data Analysis: Utilizing R, analyzation the experimental results and interpretation to draw conclusions supported by the data.Communication of Findings: Effective communication of my research findings through various platforms, including conferences, symposiums, and literature.
