I am currently enrolled at Mohawk College in the Recreation Therapy program. I am in my final year of the program. I have had the opportunity to learn about the many benefits that Recreation therapists bring to the individuals we come across. I have always seen Therapeutic Recreation as an eye-opener, everything that I have been taught about this profession has connected with whom I would like to be as a support system for those in need, to be a voice, a listening ear, and to be of help in any way I can be of assistance. You can never have too much knowledge, so I am always open to new ideas and learning new things that will benefit those I come into contact with now or in the future. My most vital skills would be that I am open, I am bubbly and I will always try my best to be helpful, I work well in group settings and I can also work well independently. Throughout the 2 years that I have been attending Mohawk college for Recreation Therapy, I have learned a number of skills that I have obtained from my courses as well as from the practicum experiences that I hope to put to use in my future as a Recreation Therapist with those I come into contact with, as well as personally. I want to help those reach the goals that they have made that are meaningful to them whether it be socially, physically, emotionally, spiritually, or Intellectually, I will try my best to reach my future clients at their needs and assist them in any way possible. Recreation is so special to me because the importance of having person-centered care means a lot to me which means helping others out and making sure that you learn from each other, I have done all of my Recreation Therapy placements within a long-term care home, and I have learned many things about the stories of residents who have lived years before me and have a great time connecting with them as I do programs with them. Everyone has a right to be treated with respect and care, everyone should be seen as an individual and not feel like they should have to be like anyone else but themselves, its okay to be different and to do things differently, thinking outside the box can always be a benefit and I will continue to believe this as well as advocate this as I progress in this field.
