OWUSS provides experience-based underwater scholarships and internships to recent graduates. One person is chosen each year in Europe to undertake a year of underwater related experiences. The scholar arranges training and experiences with the help of their coordinators, budget for their year and writes about their experiences in a blog and makes a film. I'm working on the EPA-funded research project ‘Transboundary Adaptation Learning Exchange’ (TalX), which is a collaborative project working across five jurisdictions in Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. TalX aims to establish an innovative learning network to enable a cohesive approach for measuring and acting on climate change adaptation across boundaries. It also seeks to develop best practice for processes which empower national, sectoral and local decisions makers. Each of the five case study jurisdictions are subject to similar climate risks but at different stages of maturity in adaptation planning and implementation. TalX will develop recommendations for the improvement of local and national adaptation planning and implementation. The project will be delivered in partnership with University College Cork (project lead) and Adaptation Scotland (SNIFFER).

Belfast Climate Commission: •Promotes leadership in the city(and city-region)on climate breakdown, encouraging stakeholders to take effective action now, while maintaining a long term perspective; •Provides authoritative independent advice on the most effective steps required to meet the city’s carbon reduction target so as to inform policies and actions of local stakeholders, citizens and decision makers; •Monitors and reports on progress towards meeting the city’s carbon targets and recommends actions to keep on track; •Advises on the assessment of climate-related risks and adaptation opportunities in the city and on progress towards climate resilience; •Brings together major organisations and key groups in Belfast to collaborate on projects that result in measurable contributions towards meeting the city’s climate reduction target; •Makes the economic case for project development, implementation and investment in low carbon and climate resilient projects in the city; 3•Promotes best practice in public engagement and communication on climate breakdown and climate action and its impacts in order to support robust decision-making; •Acts as a forum where organisations can exchange ideas, research findings, information and best practice on carbon reduction, low carbon energy transitions and climate resilience.

Honorary Lecturer within the School of Biological Sciences focusing on Marine PolicyResponsibilities included:I delivered guest lectures on current marine policy in Northern Ireland to biological and environmental science students.I developed and delivered careers advice for the marine biology students including mentoring students.I set up and provided placement year/six month placements for students at Ulster Wildlife.I have worked with other staff members at QUB on funding applications and developing and sitting on steering group for Masters and PhD projects.

CNCC is the statutory advisor for the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) on matters affecting nature conservation and the countryside.My duties were advising:The Department on nature conservation;The Department on the establishment and management of National Parks, AONBs, ASSIs, nature reserves and protection of wildlife species;The Minister on the establishment and management of Marine Protected Areas;The Department on the implementation of the Marine Act (Northern Ireland) 2013;On payment of grants (under the Nature Conservation and Amenity Lands (Amendment) (Northern Ireland) Order 1989;On promotional and educational activities;I represented CNCC and Northern Ireland on the JNCC Marine Protected Areas Sub Group which covers all aspects of work on MPAs insofar as these fall within the statutory remit of the JNCC, as defined in Part 2 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006. These include:Advising on strategies to achieve an ecologically coherent site network to fulfil domestic and international obligations.Advising on how JNCC and the country conservation bodies can enhance efficiency and effectiveness through co-ordinating their efforts and providing consistent messages.Ensuring linkages are made between MPA components of legislation and other aspects of legislation.Maintaining a high-level overview of progress against plans for various MPA work-streams.Since leaving CNCC I still sit on the Marine and Coastal Marine and Coastal Working Group as a co- opted member to provide marine and coastal policy expertise.

Fieldwork surveying in:the Las Perlas Archipelagos, Panama in order to designate and provide management recommendations for the “Las Perlas Special Management Zone” as part of the Darwin Initiative Loch Maddy Special Area of Conservation, Hebrides for the inauguration of site condition monitoring of marine features of the SAC. (commissioned by SNH) Sullom Voe Candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) survey and biotope mapping. (commissioned by SNH)For all three expeditions, I:was part of the scientific dive team as a supervisor, boat driver and diver;carried out sediment coring, dredging and taxonomic analysis of benthic samples;Prepared GIS maps using ArcGIS and assisted with writing reports;Videography and photography of sites while diving, of collected samples and from the boat/on shore. Worked as part of a small team supporting and learning from each others expertise.Working under tight deadlines in order to map as many priority sites as possible within the allotted boat survey time.Maximising use of the best tides/weather/surface intervals from diving where intertidal or snorkelling fieldwork was required.
