Jade Duffield Email and Phone Number
I am currently in a role working in primary schools in Devon to support children and their families to ensure that children are accessing education and engaging in their occupations that they need and want to do. I previously worked within the CAMHS Severe Learning Disability Team as an Occupational Therapist. My particular interests are supporting children and young people to fulfil their sensory, educational, social and health needs through occupation. I am co-creator of Sense-Aware, a voluntary project that helps local groups to be more inclusive for young people by teaching self-regulation and sensory awareness. Through this project, many young people and families have attended informative workshops and have been able to access sensory equipment that we have fund raised for. Sense-Aware is a 2018 winner of the Aviva community fund, and is currently in the process of building a bespoke building for this to take place.I am always looking for opportunities to volunteer and learn more about health, people and communities. I am studying for MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Occupational Therapy and have completed modules to enrich my evidence based practice and working with children, young people and their families.

Smirthwaite StudentshipSmirthwaite Ltd Jun 2018 - Sep 2018A Summer 'studentship' to research and create an informative video on the benefits of specialist seating for the child that uses it. The collaboration was very successful and is therefore hoping to be rolled out further as a result. This experience taught me new skills about media, but also great practice for condensing research into prioritised information for the video. It was also a great opportunity to work with industry, and represent the University and Occupational Therapy.

Occupational Therapy StudentAnon Oct 2017 - Dec 2017Educational And Residential Setting (Non-Nhs)STUDENT PLACEMENT 2This placement was working with children and adults with high levels of physical needs and multiple learning disabilities. Many of the young people had Cerebral Palsy or a rare genetic disorder that required them to depend on specialist equipment and support staff. This placement was insightful into school based occupations, play and occupational balance. Also, the range of specialist equipment was vast, and it helped me to learn about many different types of slings and electric wheelchairs. By the end of this placement, I held a small caseload of service users and was carrying out assessments, creating plans and liaising with the service user, family and staff team. From this placement, my interest into sensory needs was helpful but also increased, and I have gained a deep interest into intensive interaction.

Occupational Therapy StudentAnon Jan 2017 - Mar 2017Community Rehabilitation Team/ Community Hospital (Split Placement)STUDENT PLACEMENT 1Split placement within a community rehabilitation team and community hospital with separate educators. The service users were primarily older adult, and had often had a fall, a stroke or had increasing needs due to a diagnosis of Dementia. This placement helped me to gain great insight into working within a medical model to look primarily at home adaptations, discharge and care planning, and personal care routines. Notably, I gained more confidence speaking to older adults about their mental health.By the end of the placement, I was able to carry out information gathering as part of the initial assessment and used the Barthel Index confidently when carrying out PADL's on the ward. This placement grew my communication skills both verbally and non-verbally, and I particularly enjoyed engaging with patients who had residual weaknesses and neglect following a stroke. Other experience gained included carrying out a wheelchair assessment, supporting COPD/ Chronic illness groups, holding a talk on falls to a group of 10 befrienders, carrying out a role checklist and spending time with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
