AFTEROCEANIC (After Oceanic, or “AO”) is a nimble and adaptive experimental design practice focused on empowering culture and intellect in Native built environments using, art, design, and strategic cartography. Afteroceanic researches, organizes, and exchanges spatialized cultural knowledge with diverse stakeholders to look to the past, innovate in the present, improve our future wellbeing, and reflect upon and share any results

The Office of Indigenous Knowledge and Innovation (OIKI) serves as a catalyst, convener, and pathway for University of Hawai’i students, faculty, and regional communities of practice to support and grow the contemporary application of ancestral knowledge and systems: (1) in response to local and global challenges, and (2) to build and scale community-driven enterprises that strengthen social, economic, and environmental resilience. Overall research includes:Focus on the biocultural shoreline restoration of Puʻuloa (Pearl Harbor) in a unique, 2-year opportunity to collaborate with the community non-profit Hui o Hoʻohonua (HOH) at two sites, in ʻEwa Beach and Pearl City. Specific objectives to be addressed with this funding:1) Co-develop a collection of on-site research projects (e.g., capstones and internships) with HOH to that contribute to the food system restoration of Pu'uloa. Examples with existing support include:Agroforestry - food forest development and plantingLoko iʻa (fishpond) - recovery/remediationCoastal monitoring - nearshore sedimentation/water quality

Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program (RTCA) of the National Park Service (NPS) with a focus on Hawai‘i and the Pacific Islands (US Territories). Collaborating with staff members on technical assistance projects and programs related to outdoor recreation, conservation, and community development, focused on public lands (including Federal land),

• Provided support and assistance for state programs: Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry and Forest Stewardship Program• Reviewed, wrote, and provided comments on Forest Stewardship Proposals and Management Plans• Researched social- ecological functions of trees/ green infrastructure on urban landscapes (public health, policy, natural resource management)• Identified, measured, and geotagged Honolulu’s urban trees using the Tree Plotter systemin selected geographic areas• Used applicable software to create, translate, and integrate GIS data layers and digitize new data• Produced geo-referenced historical imagery and maps, and digitized new features as requested• Assists in tree planting planning initiatives, tree monitoring, and inventorying• Assisted in Native Hawaiian ecosystem restoration and plant nursery maintenance• Developed and wrote grant proposals• Communicated and distributed information/educational materials including flyers, brochures,publications, press releases, etc• Planned and prepared Forest Stewardship Advisory Committee and Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry meetings

• Participated in marine turtle monitoring, protection and community-based conservation in Caribbean region of Costa Rica.• Conducted night and morning beach surveys for sea turtle nests in San Francisco, Costa Rica.• Applied flipper and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags, properly marked, protected and recorded sea turtle activity (i.e.: nesting and crawls) and nest characteristics, including excavation date, on GPS enabled handheld devices and uploaded data.• Conducted Caiman census on weekly basis, plant phenology studies, and large mammalmonitoring at Tortuguero National Park.• Facilitated environmental education; conducted “Conservation Club” activities on a weeklybasis at the local elementary school and other conservation oriented field-trips and activities.
