I’ve worked in the care homes department now for almost two years, which was new for me. It involves dispensing medication in several different ways, depending on the care home and patient needs. Also chasing queries, missing items and specials. Making and answering calls to care homes, surgeries and delivery drivers. I enjoy admin, matching up all the important paperwork with scripts and entering all the data into the system, pulling off labels and charts having to be very organised. Another area is interims (urgent scripts) which tests you on time limits and problem solving. Setting up deliveries to and from the surgeries and care homes. Other duties include; handling controlled drugs, returns, cleaning and sometimes helping the other departments like the healthcare counter - selling over the counter meds, giving advice and cash handling etc.

I was a key holder opening the store, setting up for the day, cash handling (the safe, handover and banking), checking stock levels, accepting deliveries, checking dates and temperatures, implementing brand standards, general running of the shift and dealing with any issues throughout the day. Same with closing the store and checking for any safety issues, cleaning, breaks, training staff, creating incentives to make the shifts more fun, challenging and increase sales. Customers are the focus of what we do, smiling, friendly, helpful, accurate service so they get the best service possible and keep returning.

The job role includes: Passing the Healthcare and Dispenser courses (equivalent to NVQ level 2s) taking in, dispensing prescriptions from picking the stock, checking it’s legal and adding the patients details to the system. Ordering stock for the dispensary, checking levels and dates, including special items and returns. Making up dosset boxes for vulnerable patients, calling them creating deliveries. Chasing doctor’s surgeries for any queries and creating requests for patients. Before that I trained as a healthcare advisor giving out pharmacy medication with counselling and acting as reception to the pharmacy. Caring for patients needs using the company’s processes, genuinely caring for the patient and helping them get the most out of the experience to look after their healthcare needs. Before that, I started as a key holder Customer Assistant; opening the store, receiving deliveries cold and ambient, recording temperatures. Continuing through the daily operations scanning low stock areas, restocking, sales plan, serving on tills being trusted to deal with returns/exchanges and adding points. Whilst the store manager was away he asked me to act as assistant and conduct an interview for new staff as I’d had previous experience.

A big part of the role is our customers, face-to-face interaction, being a host not just serving great quality coffee but making a positive difference in peoples lives. Creating competitions and making ‘up selling’ fun to reach company targets. Other duties include, deliveries, ordering online, via telephone, receiving them and following up credit requests etc for missing or faulty items. There’s also temperature, coffee and date checks, cash handling/cashing up and G4S ordering and receiving. Delegating tasks, creating displays, stock counts, CV screening, phone screening, interviews and trial shifts. Running team meetings, payroll, rotas, dealing with maintenance issues and being a Maestro – Training new staff and coaching others and of course general and deep cleaning. I was about to do my MIT (manager in training) so I could become a store manager, but I went in a different direction.

Opening and closing of the store, Running shifts, Daily and weekly stock counts, Training staff, Recording dates and temps, rotating stock, identify and solve problems, work under pressure, help recruit new staff, help opening of new stores, Customer service, thorough cleaning, cash handling, deliveries ordering and receiving, coaching and recognising staff and creating competitions to hit sales targets etc.

I ran two sections: Anti pasti and Desserts, where the sections were situated we’d entertain the customers. I would train new staff, make pasta from scratch, prep with all fresh ingredients in the morning set up for the entire day, thorough cleaning, long hours, fast paced, being creative, self motivating, learning new dishes and enhancing skills.
