My NSF funded research in the Carlson Microbial Oceanography Lab at UCSB aims to understand the controls on the turnover of macroalgal dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the ocean. I investigated the bioreactivity of compositionally-different Giant Kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) DOC compounds and how the enzyme-inhibiting, M. pyrifera’s phlorotannins.
