About Joshua Dobkins
My name is Joshua Dobkins and video games have been a lifelong passion for me. From my earliest days of wandering around Zebes chasing after Ridley, to the skies of Battlefield 1942 where I flew Spitfires to valiantly defend the eastern front, to the plains of Azeroth where I cut my teeth as a paladin bringing justice to the enemies of the Alliance, I've always been a gamer. What always got me excited about video games were the beautiful cinematics that proceeded the countless hours of fun I was expecting to have. Since watching the astounding cinematics of Warcraft III, I was enthralled. Playing the cinematic experience that was the Mass Effect series was what truly tipped the scales though. I knew I had to pursue a career in cinematics. I knew if I was to start this journey, I had to do it practically and get my hands dirty. It was all about holding the camera in my hands. The weight of it. The frame. The lenses. I learned cinematography practically through a lens and studied cinematics at its origins. From there, I knew I could tell any story I wanted to by having a handle on this illustrious craft.Deck Nine Games was generous enough to give a young kid a chance to break into the industry, and since then I've gone on to craft beautiful cinematics for the Life is Strange series, the Expanse: A Telltale Game, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. These games were a true life experience for me. It showed me that games can do far more than entertain. They can heal. They can help simulate life for people and help them come to terms with the struggles of their own consciousness. I am now pursuing a lifelong career in cinematics to help others feel the way I did about games, and if I can do more than that through my work, then I couldn't be happier.

Shipped AAA title - Expanse: A TellTale Series - July 27th, 2023While working on these scenes as a cinematic artist my responsibilities included:- Previsualization and R&D in blender, Maya, or sequencer as needed. This was usually a barebones look but I was involved directly with the production of the Announcement trailer with numerous previs shots ending up as final. - Cinematography and camera animation with a focus on smooth but snappy movement with extreme focus on final camera polish for last looks.- Character blocking and staging mocap performance- Narrative editing of each moment with careful attention to mood, body language, timing, shot selection, shot affinity, and motion. Also needed to understand the logical flow for each scene along with any and all conditional content that was relevant to the scene.- Cinematic lighting with focus on color theory, mood, tone, contrast and enhancing the readability of characters. Made use of both baked lighting and Lumen in Unreal Engine when able. Worked closely with environment lighting to balance the scene and provide a strong base for me to light our characters.- Handle interactions with other departments in relation to my scenes and other scenes. This included coordinating with narrative, environment, character, engineering, and game design. Where there is overlap, especially with design, I branched out and performed as much duties as I possibly could with insight from other departments. This took the form of manipulating BP’s, adjusting placement and visibility of environment objects, etc.
