I was working as a postdoctoral researcher in the BiOrbic Bioeconomy Research Centre, funded by Science foundation Ireland (SFI), under supervision of PI professor Stefan Oscarson. Here I was developing a synthetic route to a pneumonia vaccine from dairy waste. Specifically, we were using lactose - a cheap and widely available by-product from cheese manufacturing - to build streptococcus pneumoniae capsular polysaccharides.
