At 18, I applied to be part of my college band. I was just a curious lad who thought that he sang well. I gave my audition → did wait for a day, then two & then a week - to never get a callback.The funny thing was - I threw a mini samosa party for all my friends on the day I gave my audition (LOL). I was so confident that I'll get it - But sadly, I didn’t.While most people would have given up, my 18-year-old version didn’t. I went to random singing competitions across other universities and participated in several open mics. I wasn't going to take 'NO' for an answer.Surprisingly - this persistence led me to find one of my best friends and the co-founder of my band. We started a band, recruited some of the best talent (drummer, keyboardist, guitarist) for our band, and played across Chennai.We weren't spectacular, but we had energy, we had jazz, and most importantly - WE HAD FUN. Sometimes it was hard - had no money to rent out a JAM room/ transport to carry all the equipment. But we made it all work - Just through sheer will & persistence.I now put that mindset into marketing products. If I had to round it off, 3 things that led me to get a role in a high-growth startup - without a ton of experience.Never Say Never → The First Time I saw GrowthX’s JD, I was sure that I didn’t have enough experience. But I applied anyways and aced the assignments/ interviews.Proof Of Work → I understood that to stand out, you cannot play by the rules. In the last two years of my engineering degree, I hustled my way & worked with at least 20 clients across various domains. This gave me immense proof of work and also a steady source of income.Learn At All Costs → If I don't learn something new every single day, I consider that day almost wasted. I optimize my life for learning and have loads of fun while doing it.
