Profile bio

About Jahnavi Rao

I am the President and Founder of New Voters and have dedicated the past 7 years to amplifying the voices of high school students as leaders, voters and researchers in the civic space. I graduated from Harvard in 2023, concentrating in Government with a secondary in Music. As a Senior Fellow at the Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement at the University of Maryland, I grow New Voters' coalition building and research activities. In my junior year of high school, I founded the 501(c)3 nonpartisan organization, New Voters, which empowers student leaders to run successful registration drives at their high school through our near-peer mentorship program. We have civically activated tens of thousands of high school students to vote and civically engage across our 400+ high school chapters in 39 states across the country. Now, our team of 40+ full and part-time college and high school students is working to register 40,000 students to vote by the 2024 election. I believe youth voter participation is critical to ensuring the government’s priorities reflects the interests of those who will inherit it. I took a leave of absence in the fall of 2020 to scale New Voters to have the capacity to manage more interns, train more schools and register more students. I also took a leave of absence in the fall of 2022 to intern at the White House in the Office of Public Engagement, where I continued work on engaging young people.I am also passionate about music and vocal performance, having studied Indian Classical and then Western (Operatic) vocal performance from the age of 6. I am a nationally ranked singer (NAfME & PMEA) and have performed in professional operatic productions in Italy and at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia (International Opera Theater). I have portrayed the roles of Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) and Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) in Harvard College Opera productions.

Founder & Director Of Boston Votes! / High School Engagement

I founded the Boston Votes! efforts at the Harvard Votes Challenge / Institute of Politics to extend our resources to the surrounding community and empower local high school student leaders to affect change in their communities. Through New Voters and Harvard's Institute of Politics, my team and I organized a first-of-its-kind conference that brought together 15 Boston Area high schools, through student and faculty representatives, to train them on running their own voter registration, turnout, and engagement programs at their schools! Each school was assigned a Harvard student mentor to help them through the unique path for their school. The program continues as a new High School Engagement leader is chosen each year. They manage our list of over 100 schools and match interested students with an ongoing program of training facilitated by a Harvard mentor. The Harvard Votes Challenge is the first-ever university-wide, non-partisan voting campaign with reach at all 13 undergraduate and graduate schools. During the 2018/19 school year, I organized and ran a texting campaign to register students to vote, as well as ran events in conjunction with existing organizations on campus. We also launched (and won) the first-ever voting competition between Harvard and Yale. HVC is laying the groundwork to permanently institutionalize voter engagement at Harvard University.
