Leadership Santa Barbara County is part of a loose national affiliation of over 1,000 grass roots community leadership programs operating in the United States and has attracted a number of alumni/board members who have participated in community leadership programs outside of Santa Barbara County and even California. Www.leadsb.org began as a result of an ad-hoc citizens' committee spearheaded by J W. Ballard Jr. and Delia Marlene Horwitz in the summer of 1989. The participatory decision methods of the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA), detailed in the book "Winning Through Participation" (Kendall/Hunt Publishing Co.) and thirteen years of research in self-help community development projects worldwide resulted in the unique design of the program. Since its beginning, classes have hosted over hundreds of LSBC focus groups attended by thousands of Santa Barbara community leaders and citizens to determine the curriculum, identify pertinent content, harness resources, and recruit participants.

Worked to promote a statewide series of town meetings using community television studios.

Raised over $50k in development capital while conducting a market test for a multi-disciplinary, patient and practitioner advocacy network, focused on validating emergent treatment of chioice alternatives to drugs and surgery. Workiing with the Boulder Hospital and other U.S. Pain Centers, had over 100 in our database when market research conclusions were that as much as 35% to over 50% of treatment dollars were for Iatrogenic causes, largely due to built-in incentives to overuse drugs and surgery. All our well-funded competitors threw in the towel within 18-24 months after we called it quits.
