Jai believes in identifying strategic pathways for achieving a racially, socially just and equitable transition for climate change. He brings in his vast experience in campaigning, policy advocacy and research to create impactful, measurable change. Building campaigns from scratch, analysing the political and social appetite for change, setting ambitious objectives over multi-year projects, and achieving them successfully has been his passion. Over time, he managed campaign teams, dealing with multilingual, multicultural teams as well as large groups of volunteers. Occasionally the Greenpeace experience involved long personal tangles with law enforcement and judicial processes which only reinforced the view that no change comes without a fight for it. His focussed approach has led to big successes while facing challenging political terrain in India- like the indefinite moratorium on India’s first GM (genetically mutilated) food crop, the creation of regional campaign coalitions that are still effective (and united) and the mandatory water efficiency standards for thermal power plants. For the last 5 years, he is engaged with the EU policy landscape (Industrial emissions directive, Water Framework directive and the entire environment acquis), working with national partner organisations of Europe Beyond Coal while getting obsessed with the dichotomy of the policies like state aid, environmental liability, ETS reforms, environmental data reporting, lack of EU wide water data, energy trading and the Fossil gas quagmire EU has gotten itself into. In the last few months, I am working on decarbonising the steel and cement industry, with a focus on scaling the demand for green steel and low carbon cement using public procurement. With no easy replacement for steel/ cement the transformation of this sector can easily be skewed globally specially when the technologies are yet to be ready for worldwide adoption. He has been working as a senior policy officer with the European Environmental Bureau . Otherwise he is mad about free and open source software and opposed to knowledge being a prisoner of patents.
