I am a recent honors graduate from Michigan State University with a bachelors in Plant Biology, Arabic Language, and a minor in Horticulture. I am interested in developing farming practices focused on soil health and carbon sequestration, that have cascading impacts on yields, nutrition, and ecosystem function. I believe that these practices have innumerable benefits for the ecosystem, farmers, and the global network of consumers. One tool I wish to focus on in my research is the effective production of compost amendments. Compost can be used for many purposes including increasing soil biodiversity, soil organic matter content, disease resistance, carbon sequestration, and much more. Its effective usage hinges on producing specialized blends that are fine tuned to the needs of the consumer. Unfortunately, there are numerous gaps in our knowledge that limit the effectiveness of this vital tool. Developing practices that restore health to the soil is vital in the face of the concurrent and growing issues of climate change, community degradation, public health crises, and the ensuing political impacts of such instability.

Course Instructor, Department Of HorticultureMichigan State University Nov 2022 - May 2023East Lansing, Mi, UsThis spring semester, I will teach Organic Farming Principles and Practices at Michigan State University. My goal is to give students the tools to understand the ecological factors impacting their farm so that they can produce reliable yields in changing climate conditions. The material will cover the social, political, and ecological environment in which students will have to establish horticultural businesses. With the help of my co-professor, Joannee Debruhl, to show students how to develop enterprise budgets, organic systems plans, certification documents, etc students will leave with the scientific and management tools to be further developed in the industry. -
