The proposed question to be answered in this action research project is what are two research-based strategies that can be implemented during enrichment and support periods to benefit my middle school math students’ overall academic success?

Allowing students to express themselves and express interests, experiences, and background information can give you an idea of how to best support. Giving a formative assessment will allow for a teacher to find gaps and understand the best place to begin.While developing the classroom profiles, I was able to build student profiles about their experiences and interests along with prior knowledge. Throughout the activities that were created, I allowed for the students to express who they were, what they liked, and what knowledge that they knew. By building the student and class profiles, I am able to apply the knowledge gained into effective lessons that students will engage and participate in. Continuing throughout the year to build upon the student and class profile will give a basis on maintaining a safe learning environment for the students that adapts to the student’s comprehensive knowledge. Students built on previous knowledge of solving equations with integers to learning how to solve complex equations with fractions. The students were able to use their knowledge of operations in equations to simplify or solve equations. At the start of each class period, the students reflected on what was learned the previous day or week and how it added to the knowledge being taught that day along with reviewing the vocabulary with the students in an activity or discussion. The students used origami when completing notes for Fraction Busters that were later glued into their notebooks. Then later, the assessment that was provided gave students the opportunity to use visual arts to express, explain and develop a poster that showcased their knowledge of solving complex equations. Students use Blooket on their Chromebooks to assess their knowledge on mathematical skills. The students log on to their accounts and solve a mathematical problem, if the answer is correct the students are rewarded with coins or other rewards to battle each other or gain points. Each day, students use different programs to assess along with build knowledge on gaps they may have. Monday’s students use MobyMax to assess their prior knowledge on a concept being covered during the week. Tuesday’s students use Prodigy to interact in a game that builds on concepts we have learned and provides an assessment whether Monday and Tuesday’s lessons were effective and what misunderstanding the students may be having. Wednesday’s students use Freckle to assess their knowledge. Each of these programs allows for students to solve problems for concepts we are working on but afterwards, the students are given areas that are deemed gaps the students need to practice. The students were able to use a choice board to assess the students. The choice board gave multiple types of assessments that the students were able to choose from that best supports their needs. A typical math test, letter to your grandmother, MobyMax, or a poster were options for the students. Each gives areas that students are able to showcase their mastery of Fraction Busters and solving complex problems. Throughout the class period, the students were able to demonstrate understanding of their learning goals while completing their handouts and Chromebook assignments. Assessments are a great tool to help gauge students knowledge and progress throughout a lesson or unit. Relating the assessments not only to a particular curriculum or lesson but understanding how to integrate to ensure standards mastery is key. Knowing where your students are prior to a lesson, part way through a lesson, and assessing mastery can help build students to success.

Creating mathematics for students to relate and understand how it comes into their lives in various ways can be a challenge. Stations are a great way to keep students engaged and entertained on learning different aspects of mathematics. The students are active, engaged, and further learning their knowledge while completing proportionality and rate in this lesson. There are alternative methods to complete if stations need alterations to allow for all learners to complete.
