  • Rolls-Royce
    University Research Liaison
    Rolls-Royce Jan 2020 - Mar 2020
    Bristol, England, United Kingdom
My Final Placement on the Rolls-Royce Graduate scheme was in the University Technology Centre (UTC) Liaison team. The UTCs are a collection of universities that each have a specific theme related to Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce uses their university network to develop novel technologies for the future as well as take technologies through to Technology Readiness Level 6. This gives Rolls-Royce a large flexibility in the way that they work and allows them to continually improve their products. This placement was not a traditional engineering role and took a more holistic view of how Rolls-Royce conducts their Research and Development programs with various strategic partners. It gave me an oversight in to how we bring technologies to market from initial conception and also how we utilise some of the world's experts and research centres throughout the world. This was a very rewarding placement for me as it took me away from the technical detail and gave me exposure to business side of the company. This will help me put my engineering decisions in the future in to greater context to help meet the business objectives.

Graduate Design And Make - Lean Burn Combustion
    Rolls-Royce Jan 2019 - May 2019
    Derby, United Kingdom
My second placement at Rolls-Royce was a 12 week design and make project with an internal customer. The project was aligned with Lean Burn Technology and looking at new ways of controlling fuel metering valves. The project required a rig to be designed and manufactured such that could test the performance of rotary solenoids. Role: I was co-project manager and responsible for mechanical design and manufacture. Over the course of 15 weeks I completed 3 weeks of training in CAD, Project Management and Workshop Machining. Then as a team of three engineers we set out designing and manufacturing a test rig to evaluate the performance of rotary solenoids for metering valve control. I designed and manufactured a housing that was capable of withstanding up to 30bar water pressure and meet the tight 3 micron tolerances of the metering valve. Once the rig was fully assembled I was responsible for analysing the data produced to identify trends and report how the rotary solenoid was performing. Once this was complete the results were put in to a report and given to the customer. The team had to also deliver two presentations to SME’s, the customer and the design and make team to show what we had achieved and the new understanding of technology for Lean Burn combustion.Key Skills:- Managing a project and putting together plans to meeting customer requirements.- Managing customers’ expectations and developing relationships to ensure a successful project was delivered.- Apply the principals of Systems Engineering to successfully meet customer requirements- Learning how to program CNC machine to manufacture a test rig.- Excellent team player in a small team to effectively delegate tasks to meet customer requirements.- Confident public speaker- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.- Excellent Team player within engineering project teams- High emotional intelligence (EQ) and extremely fast learner / problem solver
