Editorial Assistant Intern
My role was the identification and cataloging of relevant publications, creating records on the IMB online database, which involved: accurately identifying and entering basic bibliographical data using the IMB’s standard formats (e.g. author name(s), title, pagination, language of publication, ISBNs, DOIetc.); assigning appropriate general classifications relating to discipline, geographical areaand chronology; assigning keywords drawn from existing authority lists relating to places, persons andtexts, manuscripts, specific subjects and medieval countries and peoples; and where necessary for articles, writing a short descriptive explanation or abstract to further elucidate the scope. I also transferred already-written data from other bibliographers who were not accustomed to the digital database from Word Documents onto the digital database. Through this I developed a thorough understanding of the skills and responsibilities of a bibliographer in the identification and accurate recording of key points from a variety of data and data entry according to defined rules and stylesheet; use of complex classification and indexing systems and authority lists; understanding the processes of academic publishing; initiative in handling teamwork while liaising with multiple units within and beyond a large organisation.
