This work complemented an ongoing study of experimental and numerical prediction of ductile failure of aluminum alloys. To this end, we designed and conducted axial crushing experimental series on aluminum 6061-T6 alloy tubes using a servo-hydraulic testing machine and dynamic drop weight tester. Used ABAQUS and LS-Dyna commercial finite element packages to simulate crush experiments under static and dynamic loading and explore structural response and strains developed during collapse. In these simulations, advanced constitutive models that include material plastic anisotropy were utilized to attempt to more closely capture material behavior and to quantify stress/strain states at point of experimentally observed material failure. Conventional mechanical metallurgy techniques and various levels of imaging and microscopy were used to capture and characterize propogating microstructural instabilities.
