In my role as a research associate at Hampton Creek, I worked to purify plant proteins for use in sustainable food applications. The fact that I began working during the early stages of the company meant that I was often forced to work with restricted resources. The limited pre-existing literature relevant to the work meant that improvisation was often necessary for creation of assays to study the functional characteristics of our isolated proteins. One such assay I worked on involved utilizing dynamic light scattering to determine the polymerization rate of protein isolates in a food-based system. The result is that the plant-based egg product that I worked on can now be found in grocery stores and cafeterias across the country and I am co-inventor on a patent for the isolation of its primary ingredient. Through this experience, I further developed my ability to quickly learn new skills as needed. Additionally, working within the fast-paced environment of a San Francisco startup has given me familiarity with quickly adapting to changing demands and new developments.

Working in a small group with Professor John Henson at Dickinson College, I investigated the effects of the inhibitory drugs CK-0944666 (CK-666) and Small Molecule Inhibitor of Formin Homology 2 Domains (SMIFH2) on the actin related protein (Arp) 2/3 complex and formin proteins respectively. This was done using immunofluorescence microscopy, phalloidin staining of F-actin, live cell imaging, and cell spread analysis to determine to effects of the drugs as well as the roles of the Arp2/3 complex and formins in actin assembly. The results of our investigation were presented at student research symposium.

The Sea Turtle Restoration Network works to raise awareness of the plight of sea turtles in the US. They are especially focused on the leatherback sea turtles off the coast of California. As an intern, I created campaign letters and assisted in public relations at events such as the California Academy of Sciences Nightlife. I also assisted in transects of litter on beaches to create an analysis of the types and level of trash.

As a member of the grocery team at the Whole Foods grocery store in Mill Valley, CA, I was expected to assist customers in whatever they may have needed, as well as handle difficulties that they may have had. I also assisted in the organization and maintenance of the stock. As the store had just opened, the actions of me and my fellow employees were important in shaping the polices that the store would come to use in the future.
