About Jake Mitchell
I am currently working as a Mobile Crisis Worker - Mental Health Specialist with CMHA’s Toronto Community Crisis Service (TCCS) - Northwest Region. This role allows me to bring together my clinical expertise from being a paramedic with my growing experience in addictions and mental health work while responding to mental health crisis calls in the city, that come in through 2-1-1 or 9-1-1. This is part of the non-police led initiative that is shaping the way we respond to mental health crisis calls in Toronto. The TCCS team responds to calls that are placed to 9-1-1 or 2-1-1 that have addiction or mental health-related crisis, are skilled in clinical assessments and de-escalation strategies, able to provide specialized multi-disciplinary support, and offer rapid access to case management to the person in crisis. Prior to this role, I gained experience as a clinical case manager on Reconnect Community Health Services' South Toronto Link Team that operates under an Assertive Community Treatment Team (ACTT) model. This has increased my expertise around the Mental Health Act, psychiatric medications, and navigating community mental health services.I built strong clinical experience as a Primary Care Paramedic in Emergency Medical Services; responding to and managing various life threatening emergencies. I since have provided harm reduction, social service support, crisis intervention, and overdose response at two Safe Consumption Sites (SCS) in Toronto for over 5 years. To help combat the overdose crisis in Toronto I have been able to train hundreds of community members, peer workers, social service workers, harm reduction workers, shelter staff, and community health workers in overdose response, emergency first aid, and basic life support skills. During this time I held a role as Lead Mental Health Instructor and Senior Support Instructor for Action First Aid, where I was responsible for program development, quality control, and training instructors in program delivery.I have a diploma in Addiction and Mental Health Work, allowing me to become a registered member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). This growing experience has allowed me to form an open-minded and empathetic, trauma-informed approach to caring for patients or clients. My passion for hard work, diligence, and client satisfaction allow me to thrive in the education and health care industries. I also find passion in supporting my peers, which I do by volunteering through Boots On The Ground - Peer Support for First Responders.
Listed skills include Teaching, Basic Life Support, Emergency Medical Services, First Aid, and 44 others.
