About Jake Ross

I am a mechanical engineer specialising in the hydropower industry. Within this industry, I have worked in various roles involving hands-on, technical, and project management duties with a diverse range of stakeholders including asset owners, developers, contractors, designers and independent subject matter experts. My passion for hydropower started in the asset management team of Snowy Hydro, a leader in renewable energy generation, where I was based at the largest hydroelectric power station in Australia. Since then, I have been working across the complete asset life cycle, from project inception and execution through to asset management and rehabilitation. Outside of work, I am learning new practical skills through designing and implementing renovations to my home and tinkering with cars.

Mechanical Engineer

Cooma

In this position, I have represented the Owner in all aspects within the mechanical and hydraulic disciplines on the Snowy 2.0 Project. I was responsible for the delivery of the Employers Requirements, the evaluation of the E&M tender and overseeing review and recommendation of the Contract Documents during the Execution phase. As part of a small team, I have been a proactive core member of the project, working with my counterparts of each discipline to ensure that all aspects of the project are captured, understood and these interfaces are effectively managed. I have overseen and managed the contribution of a diverse range of internal and external professionals, including world-renowned subject matter experts. A key function of this role has been business engagement and assurance, where I have demonstrated excellent communication capability with the ability to convey complex technical concepts and implications of these to allow robust discussion and identification of solutions.Key activities included the representation of the Owner during the tender pump-turbine scale model performance testing, audits of bidders manufacturing facilities across Europe, India and Asia and the co-development of the manufacturing quality surveillance strategy.

Graduate Mechanical Engineer

Cooma Nsw

Based primarily in Cooma, NSW, I spent six month rotations in a number of departments as part of the Graduate Development Program. This included Strategic Asset Engineering, Regional Plant Engineering and Knowledge, Quality and Performance. In these teams, my responsibilities included performing condition assessments, identifying, planning and rectifying equipment faults, performing financial and business risk analysis, options analyses, and the preparation of project proposals through to financial approval across the hydro, gas turbine and diesel power station fleet. Key activities included the feasibility analysis, business case development and successful demonstration of economic viability of a new mini hydro unit within the existing Snowy Scheme assets and the incident investigation and resolution of plant failures within the Gas and Diesel assets. My participation in the Graduate Development Program ended in March 2017 upon the announcement of the Snowy 2.0 Feasibility Study, when I was offered to be a part of the team to commence the project. This initially was field based, facilitating site access for geological investigations however quickly transitioned to working on the mechanical and hydraulic design aspects of the project. This involvement saw me seconded to the design consultants international office in Malaysia to assist in the Feasibility Design and finally the co-authoring of two chapters of the Feasibility Study that demonstrated the technical feasibility of the project.

Undergraduate Mechanical Engineer

Jordan Cpp

Based near Kogan, in remote western QLD, I was engaged on a fly-in fly-out roster as a member of the Structural, Mechanical, and Piping discipline in the construction of the Jordan Central Processing Plant (CPP) on the Upstream QCLNG Project. I was involved in a range of activities, however my core role was the development of work packs for implementation of the construction works and quality surveillance of this and other works. Following these quality assessments, I led a number of client site acceptance walkdowns, addressed any issues identified and updated the as-built drawings. Coupled with the FIFO roster arrangement in a construction environment with a strict deadline, I obtained an excellent sense of time management while completing my university thesis.

Jul 2014 - Dec 2014

Undergraduate Mechanical Engineer

Caltex

Brisbane, Australia

Based on-site of the Major Hazards Facility, I was a member of the Reliability & Maintenance Department. In this team, I was exposed to undertaking and planning routine maintenance, design, modifications and repair of existing rotating equipment through to analysis for equipment replacements. I gained a firm understanding of the SAP database system and was mentored primarily by Reliability Engineers. I managed projects within their plant areas ranging from routine maintenance to modifications aimed to improve reliability of given equipment. My most memorable project in this team was the mapping and estimation of the hydraulic characteristics of a piping system for the purpose of sizing a replacement pump-set.
