At PDI I work as a chemist I in the Orangeburg QC lab, I am gaining experience with operating and troubleshooting instruments such as HPLC’s GC’s, auto-titrators, density meters, FTNIR and IR spectrometers. Performing various methods including USP identification of isopropyl alcohol by GC FID. I have completed testing for an FDA protocol to determine Benzene and Methanol contamination in Isopropyl alcohol. Most recently I have taken part in method validation for an HPLC method to determine the concentration of Sodium Benzoate and Phenoxyethanol in products. At ESF I worked in Dr. John Hassett's research lab, optimizing the extraction and quantification of inorganic phosphate with the goal to make the system automated. In the lab I worked independently and as a team making standard water samples and various reagents such as molybdate blue color reagent. I ran the samples through a spectrometer measuring the absorbance after the phosphate is extracted through a membrane and mixed with the color reagent. Utilizing parameter modification such as, type of receiving reagent, temperature of the system, path length of the cell, type of ion exchange membrane, and the size of the tubing, I reduced the detection limit and the response rate of the UV-Vis spectrometer. This experience has honed my skills troubleshooting the hardware and software for the UV-Vis spectrometer and producing accurate procedures. In addition, I developed strong communication, interpersonal and team building skills. I have gained strong analytical skills as well as an understanding of the importance of ownership over one's work.
