I qualified as a primary school teacher in December 2023, after completing a 1 year PGCE course at Gloucester University. My PGCE course followed a three-year undergraduate BA course in Education Studies. After qualifying, I worked as a long-term supply teacher in a Year 2 class for 6 months, taking on responsibilities including parents’ evening, leading school trips and organising activities for my class. This role was intended to last for two weeks, although due to unforeseen circumstances, I was asked to continue in the role until the end of the school year. During this time, I enhanced my skills as a teacher, including my adaptability, organisational skills and more generally my understanding and implementation of strategies for effective teaching. I received professional feedback from SLT during this time and was observed several times, each bringing new constructive criticisms and tips from those more knowledgeable than myself.I also wrote the end of year reports for my class, during which I displayed a keen understanding of each of my students and their strengths and weaknesses. Using this knowledge, I put together 30 reports that both offered an insight into how each student learns best and how they can improve in the subjects they struggle with. Before I began work as a teacher, I worked in nursery settings in both Bristol and Gloucestershire for the better part of three years, gaining a wealth of experience in how to work with and care for young children in a way that is conducive to their development. I also worked in the NHS for two years in a number of roles, including but not limited to the Admissions and the Medical Records departments in the Bristol Eye Hospital and the COVID-19 Hub at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. During this time, I developed skills in communication, both with members of the public and colleagues as well as file management, computer skills and professionalism.
