In upstate NY, farmland causes miles of unobstructed flat land for wind to travel unimpeded. Even good quality, nylon American flags tatter within the space of two years, and locals are at a loss for how to reverently dispose of them. I designed and constructed all-weather flag depository boxes, maintained by the troop, to collect these remnants for disposal at a Sept. 11th flag retirement ceremony in accordance with Flag Code Title 4 Section 8k. I orchestrated a letter-writing campaign to secure all necessary funds for materials, and installed boxes at a local transfer station, town hall, and fire department.
