This involved:• Designing and implementing village-scale water supply systems for livelihood projects; • Development of energy management plans for Vocational/Livelihood Training Centres;• Proposal writing and economic evaluations for new livelihood projects;• Investigating the feasibility of private alternative energy systems (particularly solar PV) for planned application amongst NGO projects.
Water & Energy Systems Engineer
Jake worked as an AusAID/DFAT volunteer for Helena Goldie Hospital and the surrounding community. Whilst redesigning and rehabilitating the hospital's water system, Jake also worked in the area on energy supply and demand opportunities, sanitation upgrades, attracting donors, and managing busy-bees with international teams.Whilst at this post he achieved the following:• The redesign & rehabilitation of the water system supplying a 70-bed rural Hospital, Nursing College & staff housing complex;• Management & training of a small team of maintenance personnel in both general & site-specific operational & maintenance techniques;• Liaison with local & international donor organisations to source funds & to create & retain investment interest;• Performed a full-scale energy audit & devised a demand-side energy management plan in collaboration with the hospital management team;• Investigation and design of a cost-effective alternative self-generating energy system (solar PV) - to be installed in 2015. Jake will be advising from a distance throughout this process.• Water system rehabilitation using domestic & commercial plumbing techniques;• Fault diagnosis & repair for pumps (electric or petrol) & water networks;• Well construction & fabrication of simple durable hand pumps (and interactive construction lessons for the local community) using locally sourced parts.
Project Manager, Water Engineer, And Wash Technician
For 7 months Jake managed, from start to finish, a large-scale EU-funded relief & rehabilitation project in remote Solomon Islands, in response to cyclone & flood damage. The project focused on water system rehabilitation, disaster risk reduction (DRR), agriculture training and tools provision, and health education. The project was successfully completed within the desired budget and timeframe, reaching over double the planned number of beneficiaries.Jake achieved the following during this posting:• Survey, design, procurement & installation of 20 rural water systems feeding over 50 villages in remote Makira;• Project management & logistics for a AU$350,000 aid project;• Training & management of two teams of field technicians;• Operation & maintenance training for each community (in Pijin English);• Installation of 40 VIP (ventilated improved pit) toilets, with construction training & CLTS triggering;• Liaising & reporting to donors, government representatives & upper management.
Co2 Sequestration Drilling & Planning Engineer; Drill-Site Manager
For 2 years Jake worked on Chevron's high-profile environmentally focussed Gorgon CO2 Sequestration Project as a drilling engineer, cost engineer and drill-site manager. His work-scope included the following:• Construction and commissioning of a new, automated land drilling rig on Barrow Island;• Design of CO2 injection, water production, water injection, cuttings re-injection & reservoir surveillance wells;• Strategic logistics for timely sourcing, procurement & commissioning;• Fluids & waste management specialisation;• Time & cost optimisation engineering.
Field Drilling Engineer / Drill Site Manager
