About Jake Brenner

As an assistant professor and attending physician at the University of Pennsylvania, I spend 20% of my time attending in the ICU, and 80% developing technologies for pulmonary & critical care medicine. My bioengineering lab develops both nano-scale and macro-scale technologies. On the nano-scale, we are developing targeted drug delivery vehicles for acute critical illnesses, such as ARDS, sepsis, and stroke. On the macro-scale, our current projects focus on respiratory assist devices, most notably those around which we formed the company RightAir.

COPD, popularly called emphysema, causes millions of Americans to suffer terrible shortness of breath during the daily activities of life. Two million US patients have such severe COPD that they cannot walk up a flight of stairs without feeling like they are suffocating. RightAir makes the AIR-AD device, which is designed to help these patients breath easy again.

PhD research in the Department of Chemical & Systems Biology.I identified a class of genes, the TRPC ion channels, as key regulators in the development of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. My work has shown that these genes may serve as useful targets for pharmacological treatment of heart failure. Additionally, my findings elucidated a new mechanism, the segregation of multiple calcium sources, underlying calcium’s role in cardiac remodeling.
