About Jake Kauderer

Hello! I am enrolled at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. I'm currently a volleyball beat writer for The Diamondback, a copy editor for Stories Beneath the Shell and a broadcaster for WMUC Sports. All of these have led to my forming of unique connections while gaining valuable experience in real-world journalism settings. As a sports creative journalist intern at Schneps Media over the summer, I covered a wide-variety of sports-related events. From being a press member at Mets and Giants games to traveling to niche events such as Fanatics Fest or the 2024 NBA Draft Capsule Experience, it was an educational and exciting experience. I had over 40 articles and videos published in total, ranging from game recaps, to edits of team practices, to profiles on team superfans. I obtained an abundance of writing, editing and reporting experience in fast-paced sporting environments. I frequently went on-camera as I recapped sporting happenings and interviewed players inside locker rooms and clubhouses, giving me valuable experience as to what it is like to cover a professional team. You may get the impression I love sports. That I do. I played basketball and varsity tennis in high school. I coached tennis to a wide-variety of age groups for USA Sports Group over the past three summers. I am continuing tennis instruction as part of Federal Work Study at school. As I have gained experience, I have learned about the importance of communication skills and creativity in tailoring lessons to players based on their needs. I was also accepted into the second-ever cohort of the Sports Management Program at the University of Maryland. From networking to sport-business classes, it has already proven to be a robust program. I'm thrilled that I'm an ambassador for the program, meaning that I help recruit prospective students through creative talks and paneling events. As part of the Environment, Technology and Economy Scholars program, I have taken part in multiple collaborative projects, such as a recent venture where myself and other students formulated a grant requesting the building of a pollinator garden on-campus. I am a peer mentor for freshman Scholars students this year along with being the singular ambassador to represent my program in discussions among all of the Scholars programs. Through this living-learning community, I've been able to develop my leadership skills and make a difference locally through hands-on projects such as a waste audit, all while learning more about environmental, technological and economical issues.
