The camps de facto slogan of “the hardest job you will ever love” rung absolutely true. Working in New York, teaching circus and looking after kids of all ages was a tremendous, albeit arduous experience.Under strict deadlines and long days I worked with a wonderful team to deliver daily lessons in mostly unfamiliar disciplines (Trapeze, Fire, Unicycle, Stilts, Trampoline and Acro), to choreograph 16 routines for 8 circus shows in my time at camp. When not teaching circus, my time was spent looking after my bunk campers. It was a true honour being trusted and getting to know such amazing souls. Some of my responsibilities included facilitating morning/evening routines, ensuring hygiene, accompanying at all meal times and medical appointments, engaging in evening activities and resolving any conflicts.One of my favourite aspects of working with kids at the performing arts festival was being impressed time and time again by their characters, identities and social awareness. I certainly learned a lot about myself through taking care, making friends of them and seeing them thrive.Beyond my official duties, I would always make myself available as a safe person to talk to about issues pertaining to mental health, sexuality and identity. It was an unforgettable experience and one I sorely wish I could do again. Unfortunately, this is not something I can justify financially, especially as I move forward in my path to becoming a barrister.
