Led team of 4 through phases of: experimental design, participant recruiting, and data analysis in R.Won Most Creative and Best Presentation from the Psych Department out of 11 projects.Abstract-Previous studies show that psychological disgust mechanisms influence social judgements, extending to politics (Helzer & Pizarro, 2011; Graham et al., 2011). Feeling disgust toward other individuals and outgroups means seeing them as less moral and less human than ourselves and our ingroups (Buckels & Trapnell, 2013; Pacilli, Roccato, Pagliaro, & Russo, 2016). In this experimental study, 275 participants (psychology undergraduates, faculty, researcher’s friends and family) were randomly assigned to view criticisms of a political opponent using either disgust language (e.g. rot with maggots) or non-disgust negative language (e.g. sink like a ship). We hypothesized that the disgust language condition will increase participants levels of political polarization, dehumanization, and moral superiority compared to participants in the non-disgust negative language condition. We also wanted to see if our moderators, individual differences in disgust sensitivity and political engagement, had any effect on the outcome. We found that our disgust manipulation had no effect on any of our measures, yet higher levels of disgust sensitivity significantly predicted increased moral superiority and political polarization. Our results support the notion that disgust mechanisms play a role in moral distancing of political opponents, even if disgust language primes failed to produce any results.
